Invasive Chinese mitten crabs spotted in Peterborough area

An invasive species of crab that can cause damage to riverbanks has been captured on video as a pair were seen trying to crawl out of a waterway.

Chinese mitten crabs have been spotted on roads and in ponds in Cambridgeshire and the Environment Agency has confirmed the identification of the species.

The footage was captured by Richard Bailey on brickwork at the Kings Dyke in Whittlesey, with other sightings at Nene Park in Peterborough.

The Nene Park Trust said: "They [the crabs] don't pose any threat to people or dogs but may give a nip if anything gets too close, so we would advise visitors to keep their distance."
