A second boy has been arrested in connection with a fire which broke out at the former Debenhams store in Canterbury city centre on Monday evening.

The 15-year-old boy from Ashford arrested on Wednesday remains in custody pending further inquiries, Kent Police said.

Another 15-year-old boy, arrested on suspicion of arson on Tuesday, is also being held in police custody.

Firefighting operations finished at the blaze at 15:30 GMT on Wednesday. The cause is still under investigation but it is being treated as suspicious.

Local businesses that were affected by the fire have now been allowed to reopen and the main high street is no longer cordoned off.

About 30 people were evacuated from nine nearby flats on Monday. They have all now been allowed to return.

At the height of the incident, eight fire engines and two height vehicles were in attendance as well as the technical rescue unit.

Firefighters had brought the fire under control by Tuesday afternoon. One person was passed into the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service due to smoke inhalation.
