War memorial closed due to anti-social behaviour

The war memorial and gardens in Goole have been temporarily closed after syringes were found at the site, the town council has confirmed.

On Tuesday, the authority told residents they had been left with no other option but to lock the gates due to "anti-social behaviour".

Town council clerk Brian Robertson said a number of discarded needles had been found, which "pose a public safety risk".

Robertson said the drugs paraphernalia had been disposed of. East Riding of Yorkshire Council had been informed, he added.

A number of people expressed sadness and disappointment on the council's Facebook page.

One person said: "Total lack of respect, these people gave their lives so we can have the life we have."

The gates are normally opened and closed by volunteers each day.

The town council said the gates would remain closed until the new year.
