Sixth murder arrest over 1994 taxi driver shooting

A sixth person has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a taxi driver who was shot dead in his cab more than 30 years ago.

Ethsham Ul-Haq Ghafoor was found in his car with his hands tied and bound to the steering wheel in Nottinghamshire in the early hours of 22 November 1994.

The 26-year-old, known as Shami, was discovered by a milkman at about 04:30 GMT at Lambley Lane Playing Fields in Gedling.

Nottinghamshire Police said a 43-year-old man from Sneinton was detained on Tuesday following the arrests of four men, aged 64, 57, 52 and 51, and a 47-year-old woman in November.

Those arrests came days after the force announced it was reinvestigating Mr Ghafoor's death with a reward of £50,000 offered for information.

All suspects have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Det Ch Insp Clare Dean, who has been leading the investigation, said: "The investigation is continuing at pace and we would like to personally thank the local community for coming forward with information and the media for sharing our appeal.

"We believe the answer to Shami's murder still lies within the community and would encourage anyone with information who has not already been in touch to please come forward."

Mr Ghafoor, of Sherwood Rise in Nottingham, was last seen in Carlton Square at about 02:00, according to police.

The father, who had a five-year-old son, was expecting a baby daughter at the time of his death.

Multiple arrests were made at the time, but no-one has ever been convicted following his death.
