Station parking price increase of up to 185% begins
Commuters and visitors to a railway station will have to pay up to 185% extra for parking as new charges have been brought in.
The rates for Corby's station followed a public consultation by North Northamptonshire Council. (NNC)
Both the Labour MP for the area, Lee Barron, and Corby Town Council opposed the increases which will result in the daily charge for the car park rising from £3.50 to £10.00.
NNC said the new rates were "in line with the lowest priced station parking charges in the area".
A weekly pass has gone from £14 to £30 while a monthly ticket is £100, up from £45.
Three months of parking will cost £270, up from £120, and a pass for a whole year is £1,000 having risen from £390.
The council has now added an off-peak rate option of £5 for 10:00 to 14:30 parking weekdays and on weekends and bank holidays.
Mr Barron, MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, previously said the increase would impose "a significant and sudden financial burden on users" of Corby station.
Mark Pengelly, leader of Corby Town Council said as well as the rise in the cost for rail users, he was worried people would "park on the local streets causing congestion".
NNC said changes have been "implemented following a public consultation earlier in the year".
It also said it had "considered all option very carefully" before bringing in the increases.
