Police were called to Queens Road in Huddersfield on Friday night

A man has been left with "life-changing injuries" after being shot at close range in Huddersfield, police have said.

Officers were called to Queens Road in Edgerton at about 21:50 GMT on Friday, where a man was found with arm and foot injuries, according to West Yorkshire Police.

The attack, which was thought to have been "targeted", was believed to have been carried out by another man who had got out of a people carrier-type vehicle just before, a force spokesperson said.

The victim, in his 40s, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries, which were believed to be consistent with a firearms discharge, they added.

Inquiries suggested that suspects had been at the scene in a dark coloured vehicle, which was thought to have been either a Nissan Qashqai or a Juke with a 2010 number plate, the spokesperson said.

After the shooting, it was thought that the vehicle had been driven off at speed towards the A629 Edgerton Road.

'Reassurance patrols'

Det Ch Insp James Entwistle, leading the investigation, said: "We realise an incident of this nature will cause shock to the local community, and the wider Huddersfield area.

"A full investigation has been launched into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed what happened to contact us.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who saw the people carrier-type vehicle in the Edgerton area at around this time, or anyone who may have captured footage of this vehicle on their CCTV or dash cam."

Police patrols had been increased in the Queens Road area "to provide reassurance to residents", Det Ch Insp Entwistle added.

"Anyone with concerns or information is asked to speak with our attending officers," he said.
