Work to demolish a former pub to make way for supported housing is due to begin.

The Wheatsheaf in Peterborough closed in 2019 and Greene King was unable to find a new tenant to run it.

According to a document submitted to Peterborough City Council, demolition of the building on Eastfield Road will begin later.

Some residents had objected to the plans for the supported housing, saying the pub was "distinctive and historic".

Squirrel Wood Properties had planning permission granted last year.

The development aims to provide accommodation for people with a range of disabilities and is designed for vulnerable adults who may need occasional support in their daily lives.

Plans include 12 one-bedroom apartments and four one-bedroom bungalows, with 11 parking spaces.

A new access route and open space will be delivered centrally through the site, providing access for vehicles and pedestrians.
