An investigation has been launched after a robbery took place outside a Waitrose store in Northumberland.

The robbery took place on Wednesday morning outside the shop in Ponteland, after a man carrying a box of cash from the store was approached by two men.

Northumbria Police said the two men took the box from the victim and fled the scene.

A cordon has been put in place around the store.

The robbery took place at about 07:40 GMT on 3 January at the branch on Main Street.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident but Northumbria Police said they are continuing to investigate.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers attended the scene where it was reported that a man transporting money from the premises had been approached by two unknown males.

“They have then taken a box from him containing a quantity of cash and fled the area before police arrived.

“The victim was not believed to have been injured but was left shaken by the incident."

Northumbria Police has launched an appeal for information.
