Man hit by car found dead in churchyard - inquest

Aaron Jones died after being hit by a car while walking his dog

A man died after being hit by a car as he was walking his dog, an inquest opening has heard.

The body of 38-year-old Aaron Jones, from Llanpumsaint, Carmarthenshire, was found in the local church grounds near Caer Salem Baptist Chapel on 23 December 2024.

The father of two was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dyfed-Powys Police is continuing to investigate the incident and assistant coroner Gareth Lewis adjourned the inquest to a later date.

Mr Jones' dog was found by a local who contacted Mr Jones' wife and a missing person's search began.

Coroner's Officer Malcolm Thompson said that at 19:20 GMT on 23 December Aaron Jones was walking his dog when he was hit by a car near Capel Salem Baptist Chapel.

The vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

Dyfed-Powys Police arrested a 27-year-old man at the time on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop for a collision, and failing to report a collision.

He was later released on bail with conditions while the force continues its investigation.

In the rural village of Llanpumsaint, flowers have been laid near the scene, as the community continues to mourn.

Councillor Bryan Davies, who represents the village on Carmarthenshire county council said the community was in mourning and described the death as "tragic".
