Plans for £250m viaduct neighbourhood revealed
MUSEAn ambitious £250m project to build an entirely new neighbourhood under a town's landmark railway viaduct has moved a step forward.
Plans have been submitted to build 1,300 homes on land either side of King Street West in Stockport as part of a joint venture by developer ECF and the town council.
The project will feature a pedestrian-only street running through the centre, past ground-floor business units and a series of green courtyards.
Joe Stockton, from ECF, said the plans - if approved - would amount to "one of the largest town centre regeneration projects in the UK".
The scheme, known as Stockport 8, also plans to reintroduce historical street patterns and names through its design, running by the town's Grade-II listed viaduct.
Those behind the plan said it fits into wider proposals for 4,000 new home across Stockport and comes after months of consultation.
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair at Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, said the plan was "not just a step, but a leap forward" towards this goal.
Mr Stockton said the scheme will see homes built "for people at every stage of life and green open spaces for people to enjoy", in a "benchmark for town centre living".
The plans will be considered by the council's planning committee in due course.
