A critically-injured man was airlifted to hospital after being assaulted in Orkney.

The incident happened on Burnmouth Road in Kirkwall on Tuesday night.

Police Scotland said the 38-year-old man was flown to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. A 39-year-old woman was also taken to the local Balfour Hospital for treatment.

Police, who said inquiries were ongoing, temporarily closed Burnmouth Road as part of their investigation, where forensic officers were examining the scene. The road has now re-opened.
