The highways construction contract to deliver "critical improvements" to the A320 in Surrey has been awarded.

The project is funded by a £41.8m grant from Homes England's Housing Infrastructure Fund, supporting the Runnymede 2030 local plan.

Improvements will include widening and resurfacing the road and improving traffic capacity and flow through four key junctions and link sections between Ottershaw and Chertsey.

Councillor Natalie Bramhall, from Surrey County Council (SCC), said: "I am really pleased we have secured this contract with John Graham Construction Ltd, and we can begin to deliver this long-awaited scheme."

She added: "Those who drive on the A320 regularly will appreciate how busy this road is and how vital these improvements are to residents and businesses along this key route."

In addition to road upgrades, the project will improve the area's drainage system and provide better facilities for walkers and cyclists, including new crossing points and wider foot and cycle paths, as well as improved access to public transport, according to the council.

Gareth McLaverty, project director at John Graham Construction Ltd, said the work was a "vital infrastructure investment" and the firm was "delighted to be delivering this transformative scheme on behalf of Surrey County Council".

Phase one of the improvement works will begin in mid-March. Enabling works, including site surveys, site clearance and establishing the works compound, start on Monday.

The lefthand lane travelling eastbound between St Peter's Roundabout and M25 junction 11 will be closed from Tuesday to Friday, and the lefthand lane travelling westbound will close halfway along the road between junction 11 and the roundabout.

There will also be off peak lane closures on the approaches to the St Peter's Way roundabout in place from Tuesday to 4 March.

It is hoped the scheme will be completed by late 2026.
