Public views sought on lowering speed limit

Surrey County Council has proposed lowering the speed limit on some roads to 20mph

Residents are being asked to share their views on plans to lower the speed limit on roads in Thames Ditton and Long Ditton.

Roads around schools, shops and a recreation ground could be reduced from 30mph to 20mph under a new scheme.

A Surrey County Council (SCC) spokesperson said the proposed plan was to "encourage lower vehicle speeds and reduce the severity of any collisions".

Roads listed in the proposals include Sugden Road, Ewell Road, Orchard Close, Fleece Road, Ditton Hill Road, Kings Road and Highfield Close.

Changes are also being proposed in pedestrian areas in the area, while the current 30mph speed limit in Fleece Road, Rectory Lane and Manor Road is proposed to stay the same.

The scheme is part of the council's new Vision Zero Road Safety Strategy, approved in July 2024, that includes a more flexible approach to 20mph speed limits, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Legally, SCC has to consider objections and comments from the public before a final decision is reached about whether or not to go ahead with its preferred scheme in its current form.

Residents have until 7 March to share their views via an online survey.
