Drivers urged to allow extra time to catch flights
Drivers are being urged to allow extra time to catch flights while a major route to an airport is being resurfaced.
National Highways said there would be lane restrictions in place while work was carried out on the A696 in Newcastle, including at the roundabouts at Kenton Bar and Prestwick.
Newcastle Airport is warning travellers to leave plenty of time for their journeys during the overnight resurfacing from 18:00 to 06:00, Sunday to Friday.
The project begins on 19 August and is expected to continue until November.
During the work there will be route diversions and a 50mph speed limit will be enforced.
National Highways project manager Adam Smith said: “We understand that these works may cause some inconvenience, but this essential resurfacing is crucial.
"By carrying out the work overnight, we aim to minimise disruption and ensure the road is fully operational during the day."
A spokesperson for the airport said travellers should check diversion routes before they set off from home.
