There have been major changes to bin collections in a town, with some cut from fortnightly to every four weeks.

Bolton residents are being warned their waste and recycling days will have changed as it has revised bin lorry routes in the borough to try make the service more reliable.

The beige paper and cardboard bins will now be four-weekly pick ups.

Households have been issued with a new bin calendar which lists all collections up to December.

The changes to the beige bins was due to a reduction in paper and card disposal, the authority said.

Nine new bin trucks fitted with "more energy efficient engines" have begun working on the new routes with a further 10 vehicles arriving in the coming weeks.

The council said the old fleet was "outdated and increasingly unreliable", Bolton Council said.

Councillor Richard Silvester, the cabinet member for climate change and environment, said: “Having not seen any changes since 2010, our waste collection service has needed an overhaul for quite some time.

“With thousands of additional properties in some areas, routes needed to be revised.

"By reconfiguring our routes, all residents will benefit from an improved service."

He said he was aware that changes to paper and cardboard collections had caused concern but wanted to reassure residents the service would be more reliable.

“Flattening carboard boxes is an easy way to free up space in your beige bin and flattened cardboard can also be left at the side of the beige bin on collection days,” he added.
