A repeat offender who crashed into a barrier while drink driving has been jailed.

Ionut Munteanu, 38, of Surrey, pleaded guilty to a string of offences and was sentenced to 32 weeks' imprisonment at Swindon Magistrates' Court on 21 October.

Officers arrested Munteanu on 20 October after he crashed a Vauxhall Astra into a barrier at Sainsbury's in Chippenham, and later failed a roadside breath test.

He was disqualified from driving for three years and sentenced to seven months in prison, in addition to being ordered to pay a £154 surcharge.

Police responded to a report of a car crashing into a barrier at a supermarket at about 13:00 BST.

The front bumper of the Vauxhall came off and the driver fled the scene.

Officers later caught up with the car on the A420, where they found Munteanu visibly intoxicated in the driver's seat.

Checks revealed he had no car insurance and was disqualified from driving so he was further arrested for these offences in addition to failing to stop after a road traffic collision.

Munteanu had been serving a suspended prison sentence for a previous drink driving offence when he committed this most recent offence.

Swindon Magistrates’ Court activated his 20-week suspended sentence and ordered him to serve a further 12-week prison sentence immediately.
