Five people have been taken to hospital following a "multi-vehicle collision" on the M23 near Gatwick Airport.

Surrey Police said the incident happened at 11.45 BST, closing the northbound carriageway between Junction 9 for the airport and Junction 8 for the M25.

The southbound carriageway also closed temporarily to allow the air ambulance to land but was opened shortly after. Two lanes of the northbound carriageway re-opened at 14:20 BST, two remain closed.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (WSFRS) said it was called to a three-vehicle collision and sent response units from Crawley and East Grinstead, along with crews from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service.

A WSFRS spokesperson said: “Upon arrival firefighters rescued three people from a car.”

Surrey Police are now appealing for any information on the incident, which involved an HGV, a minibus and a people carrier.

The force is also asking for dashcam footage of the crash.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said paramedics attended and five people were taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
