A mother wants justice for her daughter after she and a friend suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident in Digbeth on New Year's Day.

Tia Carol and her friend, both 20, were waiting for a taxi in Trent Street when they were hit by a light grey car. Tia was left with two leg fractures, a head injury, and remains in hospital.

She said: "I'm only 20, this is life changing. I'm suffering mentally and physically. I've got to learn to walk again."

Her mother, Soraya, said: "Whoever knows something needs to come forward; the person needs to be punished for what they have done. They can't get away with it."

West Midlands Police confirmed there had been no arrests in an appeal for witnesses.

Soraya, from Birmingham, said the ordeal had left the family devastated. "She [Tia] was at university, had a part-time job, and she can't do any of that now.

"She's got to learn to walk again. Getting her home is just the start of her recovery, really."

Tia's friend also suffered leg injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

Police said it was believed two men were involved in a dispute in the middle of the road on Bordesley Street when a light grey car drove towards the two women at around 23:25 GMT on New Year's Day.

Soraya has been staying at the hospital with Tia and wants to make sure both she and her friend get justice.

"We don't know who was driving, or whether they have found the car; there must be somebody who knows."

Det Insp Holl from Birmingham CID said: "This was an appalling attack, seriously injuring two women who were not involved in any dispute beforehand.

"Our investigation continues to progress, and we are still actively speaking to people who saw what happened.

"However, it's really important that if you were in the area at the time and you haven't yet spoken to us, you do get in touch.

"Any detail, no matter how small, could help our enquiries as we try to get justice for those who were injured."
