National Police Dog Trials to take place in region

West Midlands Police are set to host this year's National Police Dog Trials.

The annual trials, now in its 63rd year, will be held at the force's training centre in Birmingham and other sites in the region between 7 and 10 May.

The four-day event will see police dogs and their handlers compete in a series of trials, including agility, searching and obedience.

Chief Inspector Dan Lowe said officers were looking forward to hosting the event, which was the first one for West Midlands Police.

"Over the years, our dogs have had incredible results detaining offenders, finding missing and vulnerable people and recovering vital evidence," he said.

"Every day they work to keep our communities safe in the West Midlands and across the country.

"We can't wait to showcase their skills and show you how amazing they really are."

As part of the event, a community open day will take place on 10 May, showcasing demonstrations from the force's drone and firearm units, and appearances from "police puppies".

West Midlands Fire Service and the ambulance service will also hold demonstrations on the day, officers added.
