Investigation after sinkhole appears in town
An investigation has started after a sinkhole appeared in a Worthing street.
The sinkhole, on Mill Road in the west of the town, was reported to Sussex Police at about 20:20 BST on Thursday.
West Sussex Highways said engineers had put in two-way traffic lights to help traffic avoid the hole, and recommended utility companies check for a leak.
A spokeswoman said: "We ask the public to follow the temporary traffic measures in place and thank residents for their patience as we work to resolve this issue.”
The council said if a leak was detected, repairs would be handed over to the relevant utility company.
If no leak is detected, West Sussex Highways will fill in the sinkhole once it finishes further investigations.
The spokeswoman said: “We will provide further updates once we have more information following the inspection."
West Sussex Highways has not said how long traffic measures will be in place.
