East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) has tackled a fire in a restaurant beneath residential flats in Hove.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Portland Road at 13:45 BST on Saturday, leaving the scene at 16:21.

A fire service spokesperson told the BBC smoke from a kitchen fire in a ground floor restaurant affected the properties above it.

Everyone in the building was accounted for, according to the service.

People evacuated the affected properties when fire alarms were activated, said ESFRS.

Six fire appliances were in attendance at the height of the incident, with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service providing assistance.

ESFRS said crews used four breathing apparatuses, two high-pressure hose reels, one main jet and one covering jet to put the fire out.

An investigation into the blaze is due to take place

"As per standard practice, crews revisited the scene of the fire later that evening to check for any issues, confirming there were no hotspots," ESFRS said.

The extent of the damage will be fully known once a full fire investigation has taken place, it added.

The fire service said the incident has been left with UK Power Networks.
