Public hearings on Spelthorne's local development plan, which sets out where and when to build new homes up until 2037, will restart in the new year.

The plans have already been paused twice this year at the request of the council due to the Environmental Agency expressing concerns of flood risks to existing homes in the development areas.

The council has said it wants all residents to be safe, and that the hearings planned for January represent a significant step forward.

The council said the local plan aims to deliver affordable housing, family homes with gardens, local infrastructure, sports and recreation enhancements, a new sixth form college and greater protection for urban open spaces.

After the initial delays the EA and the council signed a statement of common ground in October this year, and the local plan resumed.

Councillor Malcolm Beecher, chair of the environment and sustainability committee, said: "We welcome the news that the planning inspector is keen to progress with the public hearings.

"The local plan will bring many benefits and protections to Spelthorne and we look forward to having it adopted so we can move onto the 'delivery phase' of the plan,"

The hearings, which are part of the public consultation process, will be held in person at Spelthorne Council's offices and begin on 27 January.

Those who have already made a representation will have the opportunity to appear at the hearings and speak directly to the planning inspector.

Details regarding participation and specific discussion topics for each date will be confirmed closer to the opening of the hearings.
