National Highways says diversion routes will be in place

A weekend-long closure of part of the A3 in Surrey is set to start on Friday.

The closure is expected to be in place from 21:00 BST on Friday until 06:00 on Monday, according to National Highways.

The road will be closed in both directions between the M25, which connects with the A3 at junction 10 near Wisley, and the Painshill roundabout, which joins the A3 to the A245.

The closure will allow further work on upgrading junction 10 and the Wisley interchange.

National Highways said diversion routes would be in place while work was carried out.

The £317m project, which broke ground three years ago, was originally due to be completed in the coming months.

However, National Highways confirmed in February that it had pushed back the completion date by nine months due to "periods of extreme weather in 2024".

The upcoming closure follows an M25 closure in March that allowed for the demolition of a bridge over the motorway. That closure was expected to be the final M25 shutdown for the project.

A part closure of the M25 for the project in early 2024 was the first planned daytime shutdown of the motorway since it opened in 1986.

The project faced opposition prior to its approval, including from TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh, over the loss of trees in the area.

The scheme adds additional lanes to the A3 around the junction, enlarges the interchange, creates safer local access roads and brings "improvements to the local environment", according to National Highways.
