More homes proposed for new 1,500-house estate

Dozens more homes could be built next to a major housing scheme if plans are approved.

Bellway Homes has submitted plans for 149 houses next to the proposed Seaham Garden Village in County Durham.

The development has permission for up to 1,500 homes, as well as a health and wellbeing village, primary school, allotments and shops.

Bellway said the "relatively small-scale extension" would support the "sustainability of the current and future planned development".

Planning documents submitted to Durham County Council showed a mix of two to five-bedroom homes, with 22 set to be marketed as affordable.

If approved, farm buildings currently on the site would be demolished, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Earlier this year it was confirmed 750 affordable homes would be built at Seaham Garden Village in a partnership between Karbon Homes and Esh Construction.

The estate is being built in phases, with the first affordable homes expected to be ready soon.
