People urged to update some internet routers

A warning has been issued to Manx residents after risks were identified in some internet routers, making users vulnerable to hackers.

It follows the publication of a report last month that identified 14 new vulnerabilities in some manufactured by DrayTek.

The Cyber Security Centre for the Isle of Man has advised those who own or use the routers to make sure updates have been carried out and security patches applied.

About 440 of the devices are currently being used on the island, with hackers able to access sensitive information on affected devices, it said.

A spokeswoman for the centre said routers that have not been updated could act as a gateway for hackers to see and modify traffic passing through the device.

That could include information such as login details, financial data and personal correspondence.

It could also allow malware to be uploaded to a network.

Individuals have also been advised to regularly check for updates from the centre and speak to their IT providers about patches and updates.

Centre director Mike Haywood said ensuring the devices were protected was essential, and vulnerable equipment remained "widespread across the island".
