Members of the Muslim and Jewish communities in Surrey gathered on Sunday in an "interfaith collaboration" to collect for a local foodbank.

Kawther Hashmi, from the Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum and Shah Jahan mosque in Woking said: “At a time when unity is so vital, our shared values of compassion and charity shone through."

Liz Sawyer, from the North West Surrey Synagogue in Weybridge said: "It’s so important we all work together to support people in need in our local community. Volunteering together helps build and strengthen relationships.”

Supporting the Runnymede foodbank, the group collected food items such as tins, deodorant and Christmas treats outside Morrisons and Waitrose supermarkets in Weybridge.

Ms Hashmi added: "Supporting the Runnymede Foodbank highlights how interfaith collaboration can make a real difference in our community.”

Runnymede Foodbank has branches in Egham, Englefield Green, Chertsey, Addlestone, and Weybridge.

The organisation is requesting donations of food and household items, particularly washing-up liquid and antibacterial spray.
