Man still being questioned over cruise ship death

Police are continuing to question a man held on suspicion of murder after a man died aboard a cruise ship.

The man, in his 60s, died on Saturday night following an altercation at about 20:30 BST on the MSC Virtuosa.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said a 57-year-old man, from Exeter, Devon, remained in custody.

The ship left Southampton at 18:00 on Saturday on a two-night voyage to Bruges, Belgium, returning at 06:00 on Monday.

In a statement, MSC Cruises said: "Following an incident on board our ship, the relevant authorities were contacted, and we are cooperating fully with their investigations.

"We are providing full support to those impacted and thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time."

Police said the victim's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

The vessel, which has capacity for up to 6,334 guests, has since sailed to Zeebrugge, Belgium.

Channel 5's crime drama series The Good Ship Murder was filmed on the ship.
