Supermarket armed robberies prompt police appeal

An investigation is under way after three armed robberies, possibly involving a gun, at supermarkets in Leicestershire.

The first happened at Tesco in Blaby Road, Wigston, at 23:55 BST on Thursday.

The second armed robbery took place at Tesco in Ethel Road, Evington, at 21:40 on Friday, before a third happened at Sainsbury’s, near Fosse Park in Enderby, at 09:25 on Saturday.

No injuries have been reported but Leicestershire Police is linking the raids, describing them as "extremely concerning".

The force said two men entered the stores at separate times before attempting to leave without paying for bottles of alcohol and to have reportedly made threats with a gun when challenged.

A knife was also used during the incident at the Sainsbury's store, police added.

The suspects are reported to have left the scenes with bottles of alcohol.

Det Insp George Fraser said: "These incidents are extremely concerning and we are treating this investigation as a priority.

"We have been speaking to a number of witnesses, are fully analysing CCTV from the areas and have officers carrying out enquiries at the scenes.

"We also want to appeal to members of the public for any information you might have."
