One-way traffic safety trial comes to an end

A six-month trial that saw a section of road in St Helier changed into a one-way system has ended.

Drivers were prevented from accessing St John's Road from Cheapside during the scheme in a bid to make it safer for residents and pedestrians.

The trial was finally approved by the Minister for Infrastructure in May after previous iterations of the plan were shelved.

The government said it would evaluate the trial and consider implementing the change permanently if it was successful.

At the start of the six months, the government it said it hoped the changes would "enhance local amenity, encourage people to use more sustainable transport and make the road safer for pedestrians".

While drivers were prevented from accessing the road in a northbound direction, it has remained accessible for pedestrians, buses and residents.

The government has not yet announced a decision on whether the scheme, which ended on 29 November, would be made permanent.
