Sinkhole road closure to continue overnight
Parts of the St Helier ring road, Clarendon Road and La Pouquelaye will remain closed until Thursday afternoon due to an unstable building.
A burst water main on Rouge Bouillon - which Jersey Water said it repaired on Wednesday afternoon - created a sinkhole beneath the road.
It caused cracks to appear in the walls of the building that makes the corner of Clarendon Road, and Rouge Bouillon, at the bottom of La Pouquelaye.
Jersey Water apologised while the government said it remained concerned about the affected building and parts of the roads would remain closed until at least 13:00 GMT on Thursday.
It asked islanders to avoid the area and said monitoring would continue in the meantime.
Residents of neighbouring buildings can enter their homes, it added, and Jersey Water will be in contact to keep them updated.
Meanwhile, all schools would open on Thursday, it said, with parents asked to walk where possible, and to look out for updates from schools.
Janvrin school parents were advised to park at Waitrose and walk via Drury Lane and College Gardens to drop off their children, while d'Auvergne parents were asked to walk or to drive via Lower King's Cliff.
'Ensure public safety'
Jersey Water said the burst water main had been repaired in the Rouge Bouillon area, near the bottom of La Pouquelaye.
"We are now actively working with the infrastructure department, the emergency services and other utilities to assess the immediate vicinity."
It said agency staff were assessing damage to a nearby building to "understand the cause", while a business had been temporarily moved from its premises "to ensure public safety".
The section of road between Midvale Road and Palmyra Road will remain closed until all necessary investigations have been completed, it said.
"We recognise that this is a very busy area of St Helier and we are jointly working to get the road open as quickly as possible.
"We thank the public for their patience and we apologise for the inconvenience caused."
