Christmas event a 'comfort blanket' for lonely

A Christmas event for isolated residents in Brighton and Hove is "like a comfort blanket" for those who may otherwise be spending the festive season alone.

About 160 guests were invited to The Grand hotel for a day of "warmth, community and celebration", organisers said.

Together Co, a loneliness charity that runs befriending services in the city, said guests enjoyed a two-course meal and performances of singing and magic.

Hilary Howard, who attended the party, said the charity was "always there for you".

"It's like a comfort blanket," she said.

"Coming to Brighton was my dream, and Together Co was the icing on the cake for me."

She said the event was "spectacular".

Meanwhile, Terry Sadler said he was "very lucky to be a part of it".

"I have two grandchildren in Kent and my daughter is in Jersey, so I am lonely," he told BBC Radio Sussex.

Guests at the event, titled Winter Warmer, included TV presenter Gail Porter and Mayor of Brighton and Hove Mohammed Asaduzzaman.

The Brighton Welsh Male Voice Choir and singer Karen Etherington performed for guests, as did magician Greg Williamson.

Together Co chief executive April Baker said the event was held to show lonely people that they were valued, particularly at a time of year that can feel isolating for many.

But Ms Baker said the event was about more than just a meal or entertainment.

"The Winter Warmer exemplifies Brighton and Hove's community spirit, bringing together the people we support, volunteers, and the business community, to make a lasting impact," she said.

"The event is not only a memorable celebration but also fosters new friendships and strengthens the city's social fabric."

Festive hampers were also delivered to housebound people in the week leading up to the event.
