Flats evacuated after building engulfed by fire

Residents of some flats in St Helier were evacuated due to the risk of a fire spreading from a neighbouring building.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said it was called to the West Hill area at about 21:15 BST on Sunday.

Crews were "confronted with a fully developed fire" within a detached building "housing an electrical power station, refuse, and storage".

The fire service said at the height of the fire, which was later extinguished, there was three fire engines, a water carrier and 18 firefighters on the scene.

"The blaze had taken hold of the interior refuse area and was beginning to spread into the roof and posing a significant risk to an adjacent four-storey residential block," the fire service said.

"As a precaution, residents in the nearby flats were swiftly and safely evacuated.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus commenced an aggressive attack on the fire using two water jets."

It said the blaze was brought under control and prevented from spreading further.

"No injuries have been reported," the fire service added.

"The scene has now been made safe and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and follow-up."
