Jersey's new ferry operator has confirmed the first vessel which will provide the island's passenger and freight services.

Danish firm DFDS was selected to run Jersey's sea links, meaning the end of Condor Ferries' 60-year history of providing ferry services to the island.

DFDS has confirmed the Stena Vinga will operate on the route between Jersey and Portsmouth from 28 March.

Chris Parker, route director Jersey for DFDS, said: "We look forward to welcoming passengers aboard and providing them with a comfortable travel experience and meeting the diverse needs of the island."

Peak season demand

The company said the 125m (410ft) long RoPax vessel could carry up to 400 passengers and 200 cars.

It said it would have five rotations per week in peak season, with evening departures from Jersey and morning departures from Portsmouth.

"The vessel was built in 2005 and is equipped with 40 cabins, a restaurant, a duty-free shop, a cinema and a recliner lounge," it said.

DFDS said it would also operate one RoRo (roll on-roll off) vessel and two high-speed craft on the Jersey ferry service.

In peak season, DFDS's high-speed craft would service the route between Jersey and St Malo, with up to 11 rotations per week, and between Jersey and Poole with up to five rotations per week.

"To accommodate the high demand in the peak season, the frequency of services will be increased to ensure that our passengers have more options and flexibility when planning their travels," Mr Parker said.

The summer timetable is expected to be published by Friday.
