Car park reopens after borehole work completed

A car park that closed for three months to allow work on a redevelopment project is to reopen on Monday.

The temporary closure of the Gap car park, on Raven Meadows, Shrewsbury, was to allow for boreholes to be drilled as part of the Smithfield Riverside regeneration scheme.

Since the site's closure, management of the car park has transferred to Shropshire Council.

Councillor Dean Carroll, cabinet member for housing and assets, said the authority appreciated the patience and cooperation of residents, business and visitors.

The Smithfield Riverside regeneration aims to create leisure and hospitality venues, office spaces and housing.

During the car park's closure, boreholes were drilled to collect core samples for laboratory testing, and groundwater monitoring installations were put in place to assess water levels and quality.

The council said these investigations were essential to ensure the new development’s design was robust, sustainable, and suitable for the area.

Mr Carroll said: “The data gathered from these investigations provides a crucial foundation for the design of the Smithfield Riverside project, ensuring the site’s future as a vibrant space for Shrewsbury.”
