An 18-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a teenager.

The victim, a 19-year-old man, is believed to have been stabbed during a fight involving a group of people on Derwentwater Road, in the Teams area of Gateshead.

Emergency services were called to nearby Morris Street at about 15:45 GMT on Saturday to treat the victim, who remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Northumbria Police said those involved are known to each other and the suspect is in custody.

Officers remain in the area while they carry out further inquiries.
