A historic shelter in Kent has reopened after an extensive refurbishment.

The Grade II listed Nayland Rock Shelter in Margate was badly damaged through fire and vandalism in 2023.

The shelter is believed to have been where poet TS Eliot composed part of one of his most famous works, The Waste Land.

The site, which has been closed since April last year, has been restored to make it safe for public use, Thanet District Council said.

As part of the refurbishment, the roof and wooden flooring was repaired, the fire-damaged seating area was removed and replaced, and automated lights were installed inside the shelter.

The work cost a total of £90,000.

It is believed that the shelter was constructed between 1872 and 1896.

Councillor Steve Albon, cabinet member for cleansing and coastal services, said it was an "iconic" structure with one of the best views on the coast.

"I'm impressed with the quality of the refurbishment. The shelter is a genuine part of Margate's coastal heritage, and its links with TS Eliot make it even more important," he said.

"I sincerely hope that people will help us to look after the structure and that it will provide a focal point on Margate's seafront for many years to come."

He added: "I'd like to thank everyone that played a part in returning the shelter to its former glory. It's been a complicated project, but well worth it."
