Police called over 'threats' to council staff

Derby City Council has put restrictions on people visiting its headquarters after "threats" were made to staff over the phone.

The authority said it alerted police on Monday following reports of "malicious communications" to employees.

The Council House will now open on an appointment-only basis until further notice.

Derbyshire Police said it received the report just before 12:10 GMT on Monday and inquiries into the circumstances of the calls were ongoing.

The force added security staff locked the doors to the building for a short amount of time as a precaution.

A spokesperson for the city council said: "The safety of our staff and residents is our top priority and we take threats of this nature very seriously.

"As a precaution, our Council House will be working to an appointment-only basis until further notice."

The authority also apologised for any inconvenience caused.
