A prisoner who absconded from an open jail has been seen boarding two trains as police continue to hunt for him.

Daniel Gee, 44, from Liverpool, went missing from Kirklevington Grange Prison, near Yarm, Teesside, on 27 May.

Gee was given an indefinite sentence in 2010 for making threats to kill.

Cleveland Police said he met a woman with a pushchair at James Cook University Hospital train station, where they travelled on two trains together to Darlington.

On 28 May, Gee was seen on CCTV waiting at James Cook University Hospital train station at 11:50 BST.

The force said he met a woman with a pushchair on the platform between 12:00 and 13:30, where they both boarded a train to Middlesbrough at 13:27.

Gee is pictured wearing a blue coat with his hood up, stood next to the person in the CCTV images, police confirmed.

Officers said they then boarded another train to Darlington, where they alighted and both went their separate ways.

Police said the person travelled with the pushchair towards Yarm Road and the town centre.

Detectives said they would urgently like to speak to the woman in the images, who is wearing a leopard print hat and a knee brace.

Cleveland Police has said Gee has links to the North Yorkshire area including Whitby, as well as Carlisle, St Helens and Liverpool.

The Ministry of Justice previously confirmed a prisoner had absconded, describing the scenario as "rare".

Gee is described as a white male of large build, about 6ft (1.8m) tall, and bald.

He was last seen wearing a black jumper, black Adidas trouser bottoms with a white stripe down each leg, and black trainers. He was carrying a yellow JD Sports bag.

Gee was found guilty of two counts of threats to kill and another two of blackmail in 2009. He also admitted conspiracy to possess firearms and ammunition.

He had previously been the subject of months of police surveillance that recorded him making threats and trying to obtain firearms, after he was shot in the stomach outside a pub in the Anfield area of Liverpool on New Year's Day in 2008.

He went on to make threatening phone calls to the family of the man jailed for shooting him.
