A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked with a hammer in his own home in Newry, police say.

It happened in the Violet Hill Avenue area of the city around 20:00 BST on Wednesday when he disturbed a burglary.

He said he was assaulted by two men wielding a hammer, while one of the men also had a machete-style knife.

The victim's injuries are not believed to be life threatening and a 40-year-old man was arrested but has now been released on bail.

The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are continuing with investigations and have asked for anyone with information to come forward.
