Work under way to create new social housing estate
Demolition work has started as part of a £40m redevelopment of a social housing estate in Wolverhampton.
Bungalows on Valley Road are the first buildings to be pulled down as part of plans to deliver New Park Village.
Proposals to demolish a total of 205 "out-dated residential properties" to make way for new homes were approved in December 2024.
More than 180 two, three and four-bedroom rented homes are due, with phase one of the redevelopment to deliver 98, and phase two, 83.
A site on Longford Road has also been earmarked for seven new bungalows.
The £40m programme will be funded from the city council's Housing Revenue Account (HRA) capital budget.
Val McKean, chair of New Park Village Committee, said people on the estate were excited to see demolition work begin.
He said: "I hope it's going to bring the community back to where it was many years ago - like a family.
"It's a new beginning and I think it's going to be amazing."
Councillor Steve Evans said the new estate marked the start of the council's promise to deliver good homes in well-connected neighbourhoods across the city.
"In the long-term, the redevelopment will contribute to the improvement of tenants' living conditions with the provision of highly energy-efficient new homes, better play areas and green space creating an environmentally-friendly estate," he said.
