Primary teacher wins top award
Pearson National Teaching Awards/Another WordA primary school teacher from Doncaster has been awarded the Gold Teacher of the Year in a Primary School.
Natalie Poornomansy, who works at Outwood Primary Academy Woodlands, was given the news on the BBC's One Show on Monday by her favourite pop stat Duncan James of Blue.
Selected from thousands of nominees in the Pearson National Teaching Awards, she has been recognised for her exceptional contribution to both students and the wider community.
Ms Poornomansy said: “I think anyone that works in teaching knows that sometimes it feels not very appreciated, so it’s nice to know that people notice.”
The award highlights teachers who go above and beyond to have a significant positive impact on the lives of those around them.
Ms Poornomansy was recognised for her work establishing the school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision, including teaching sign language to songs during music lessons.
She was also commended for creating a classroom environment where children felt inspired to succeed.
The One Show had worked with the school organise a Woodland's Got Talent event and during the performance guest judge Duncan James surprised her with the news of her win.
Sharon Hague, managing director of school assessment & qualifications at Pearson UK, said: “It is an honour and privilege to be able to recognise and celebrate all of those who work in education.”
She says that the impact teachers have on students is “undeniable” and congratulates the “dedication that educators show each day”.
The remaining winners will be announced across the week on The One Show ahead of an awards ceremony at the weekend.
