Man injured after jumping on bonnet of getaway car

The man was injured when he fell from a car as it drove away from the scene of a robbery

Two people have been jailed after a man was dragged along a road for half a mile as he tried to stop a robber in a getaway car.

The passer by stepped in when Keith Wilcox snatched a woman's handbag in the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Castleford before fleeing in a Vauxhall Corsa being driven by Lisa Burgess.

The man jumped onto the bonnet in an attempt to stop the car on 1 September, before falling off and fracturing a number of ribs.

Burgess, 44, and Wilcox, 41, both of Church Lane, Outwood, Wakefield, were sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.

Following the robbery, police said Burgess attempted to use a bank card which was inside the bag at a shop in Altofts.

Burgess, who had previously pleaded guilty to robbery, fraud and causing injury by dangerous driving, was jailed for three years and disqualified from driving for 42 months.

Wilcox pleaded guilty to robbery and was jailed for 20 months.

PC Natalie Carr said the victim had shown "immense bravery standing up against something that he knew to be wrong".

She added: "We all have a part to play in challenging violence against women and girls and I know how thankful the female robbery victim is for his actions."
