Rail station entrance plan approved

Further plans for the redevelopment of a city's train station have been approved by councillors.

The scheme will see a public square created outside Carlisle station along with the construction of a new car park nearby.

Cumberland Council said the Southern Gateway project would make the area "a pedestrian-friendly hub".

Work is due to start in the autumn after work to nearby roads is completed.

A related development on the northern side of the station was approved in February.

That element will see Court Square pedestrianised and Lawson's Monument moved.

Council leader Mark Fryer said the schemes would make the station "easier to navigate, attract more visitors to the city and support local businesses".

The total redevelopment cost is estimated at £27m.
