Black plumes of smoke have engulfed a scrapyard at a city's industrial estate as emergency services battle a blaze there.

Seven fire engines are at Michael Douglas Auto Salvage and Scrap Metals on Stainton Road, in Etterby, Carlisle, which has been shut.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said Network Rail had been informed due to proximity to the nearby railway line.

The cause of the fire is not known and police are also at the scene.

A shot taken across a field shows black smoke plumes coming from the scrap yard.

The spokesman added: "We encourage residents and businesses nearby to keep windows and doors closed."
