Site of derelict swimming pool may be redeveloped

The site of a derelict former swimming pool could at last be redeveloped, a councillor has said.
Durham's old Baths at Elvet Waterside closed in 2008 and the area was set to become the university's new business school until the plans were shelved.
Now, Durham County Council has revealed it hopes to convert nearby land into a cafe and outdoor gym or play area.
The building itself is owned by Durham University and Councillor Elizabeth Scott said: "It is for the University itself to determine its future but I'm aware it is part of a wider estate strategy."
Durham's City Baths and Washhouses opened in 1932 replacing an older bathhouse from the 1860s.
The pool closed when the Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre was completed and has since been repeatedly targeted by vandals.
Councillor David Hall said recent council work to redevelop the DLI Museum and purchase the Milburngate site in Durham City had led to questions from the public about the future of the "eyesore building".
He said he would like to see "a proper regeneration of the site" including "purchasing it back from Durham University if necessary".
Offering hope, Scott said: "Further details of the council's plans for the site including a public consultation will be revealed later this year."
Despite the council's proposals, Durham University's plans for the site remain unclear.
A spokesperson said: "Any proposals for this site would be subject to the statutory planning processes, including consultation."
