Guernsey's HM Greffier is retiring after 14 years in the post.

Jon Torode said he would step down from the position he has held since August 2011 on Friday.

The States of Guernsey said Mr Torode's duties as HM Greffier included being clerk of the Royal and Magistrates' Courts, registrar of the Guernsey Court Of Appeal and registrar-general of births, deaths, and marriages.

Mr Torode said it had been an honour to serve in the role and the process to appoint his successor was under way.

'Significant contributions'

Mr Torode took over from Ken Tough, who had served in the role for 30 years when he retired.

Before being appointed HM Greffier, Mr Torode worked at the States Insurance Authority before becoming an officer at Customs and Immigration.

He has also served as Senior Sea Fisheries Officer.

The States said during his time in office, Mr Torode made "significant contributions" to the island including assisting with the introduction of the new marriage law in 2020 and digitalisation projects such as the Guernsey Legal Resources website.

'Been a privilege'

Mr Torode said he had really enjoyed working in the various jobs he had held during his career, including his tenure as HM Greffier.

"It has been an honour to have served in my current role as HM Greffier," he said.

"I have been greatly assisted by a dedicated group of professional people that work in the different areas of the Royal Court.

"It has been a privilege to have worked with so many interesting and knowledgeable people over the years."
