Buildings to be demolished at regeneration site

Two more buildings are to be demolished as part of a city centre regeneration scheme described as the "most ambitious" in the UK.

Sunderland City Council's planning department has approved the applications for the former businesses on the Sheepfolds Industrial Estate.

The Ceramic Tile Distributors building in Brooke Street and a site described as the "Mini Place" in Wilson Street North will both be pulled down in January.

It is part of a phased demolition of a number of old and unused industrial units as the site is gradually redeveloped.

The project has already seen the opening the Sheepfolds Stables hospitality venue.

The Grade II listed Sheepfolds was built in 1883 and housed working horses for the North East Railway Company.

Council bosses want to link the area and the Stadium of Light to the former Vaux brewery site via a new bridge over the River Wear.

There are also plans for hundreds of homes.

Demolition plans so far have covered factory units and a former fish and chip shop, as well as buildings once linked to printing giant Edward Thompson.

The demolition of the two buildings is expected to take about one month to complete, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
