About 30 people were evacuated from apartments in Jersey following a blaze, the fire service said.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said residents were re-accommodated in a nearby hotel after the fire broke out in a self-catering suite at the Merton Hotel in St Helier which "quickly spread around the building" on Tuesday at about 22:45 BST.

The fire service said a resident awoke to the fire and "heavy smoke in his room" and was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

It said an investigation and clear-up was under way.

A statement on the fire service's Facebook page said: "A resident awoke to a fire and heavy smoke in his room. He managed to escape after throwing a fire blanket over the flames and was later treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to deal with the fire and smoke spread."
