A preliminary inquest has heard that a man died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a fire in his home.

George Michael Monte De Ramos Castrudes, 37, died in hospital on 23 January after he was rescued by firefighters from a portable home in the grounds of La Valette nursery in Grouville on 19 January.

Deputy Viscount Matthew Berry read a report from Dr Andrew Woodward, an anaesthetist at Jersey General Hospital, which said Mr Castrudes had died from hypoxic brain injury due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

A full inquest is due to be held at a later date.

Unexpected death

Mr Castrudes' family watched the inquest, which was held in Morier House in St Helier, via video link from the Philippines.

The preliminary inquest was held to enable Mr Castrudes' body to be released to his family.

His body is due to be repatriated to the Philippines.

Mr Castrudes' sister asked why her brother had not left the building when he realised it was on fire.

The coroner said the cause of his death may give a reason but he could not come to any conclusions until the investigations was complete.

The coroner's department is investigating the case as an unexpected death and the cause of the incident is being investigated by the fire service.
