A £99m project to build a "super bus lane" will be delayed, councillors have been told.

Work to construct a new rapid transit system through Colchester city centre, from the north to the east, was originally expected to finish towards the end of 2024.

The project led by Essex County Council, was now not expected to be fully completed until spring 2025.

A spokesperson for the authority said delays have come from "a number of issues including additional time needed for ground and drainage works".

It is one of the largest transport schemes taking place in the city, and the project will also see the creation of walking and cycling facilities.

Conservative councillor Tom Cunningham, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and sustainable transport, said: "We share local people’s frustration at the length of time taken.

"While we are disappointed some works need to be undertaken in the new year, we are reaching the final stages of the scheme.

"Positively, this has meant we have been able to start reducing traffic management on site."

Earlier this year, some residents living on the planned route in Northern Approach Road, said the scheme had damaged properties.

Cunningham added: "Throughout the works, we have been mindful of the impact on drivers, as well as residents. Over the coming weeks, traffic management will continue to be removed where it is safe and practical to do so."
